A bit of a makeover . . .

Good day, all.

Just a quick one. I know I've done this before, but with the launch of AWM just a few weeks away, time necessitates I begin to focus the blog on my own stuff for a while. Once things have settled down, I'll be back in the business of promoting all that great writing out there by all those great writers and friends that pop onto this blog every now and then.

I've given the blog a bit of a makeover, and any comments as to how it can be improved will be much appreciated. I've also got my own domain name. Yay :)

I'll hopefully be updating the blog about three times a week with news and photos and whatever else comes to hand related to ABIDE WITH ME and, indeed, UNCLE MILDRED.

I'm waiting for Jonathan. Jonathan isn't here, yet. He's a shy lad, Jonathan. He doesn't talk much. But he thnks. My in heaven, how he thinks. They're all in his eyes, his thoughts.

And there's only me can see em.

About his father, mostly. Not what you'd call a nice man, his father. Sits in his armchair all day giving out his orders, not seeing the darkness in the eyes of his son glowing brighter by the second.

He thinks about his mother a lot, Jonathan. His mother is dead and he knows it in his bones and he knows his father knows it in more than his bones but he hates his father too too much to ask.

I just want a word. That's all.

I want to tell you about my friends. Well, not friends, exactly. More . . . people I know. Not even that, some of em. Some of em are just stories I been told. Stories I've heard. Some of the individuals I don't even know their names. They won't tell me, see.

They won't tell me . . .

But some of em will. Sort of. After a while, you know.

Over the next few weeks, I'm going to introduce em to you. There's George and there's Archie, and Charlie and Jonathan. Ethel, Len, David, and Steven. Life after Trestle? Course there is . . .

After the Trestle debacle of last week, at last some good news. Ex-Trestle authors, of which there now are many - Heath Lowrance and Fiona Johnson (aka McDroll) - haven't let the grass grow very long, as it were. Heath has been picked up by the David Cranmer's brilliant BEAT TO A PULP, and today, Fiona self-published The Wrong Delivery - Corrin's Eyes

UNCLE MILDRED has arrived . . .

My first ebook - a collection of fourteen previously published short stories, plus one bonus unpublished one, is now available.

All the proceeds from this book will be split between CANCER RESEARCH UK and THE BREAST CANCER CHARITIES OF AMERICA.

As I mentioned in a previous post, cancer - specifically breast cancer - has hit my family hard in recent years. Sometimes it's only when you or a loved one are at the mercy of this insidious disease that you realise what an incredibly vital and amazing job charities such as Cancer Research UK and TBCCA do.

I'll keep everyone up to date on sales, and if you know of anyone that might be interested in downloading the book in order to raise a bit of much needed cash, please pass on this post. And, of course, as many reviews on Amazon or elsewhere will do much to increase the profile and, hopefully, increase sales.

I'm rubbish at self-promotion - that's why I promote you lot every chance I get (seemingly few nowadays), but this, this book, it's for charity. And that is something I'm going to shamlessly promote till me eyes fall out.

Well, as some of you might be aware, I've collected some of my stories together and will putting them out as an ebook under the title 'UNCLE MILDRED and Other Stories. All of these stories have been published before in one form or another - although all have been re-tweaked - but I wanted an opportunity to gather the best of them all together in one place.

Initially, I was going to make the thing a freebie, but then I had a thought . . .

My little sister was diagnosed with breast cancer a few years ago. So was my mum, and my aunt. Thankfully, all are now well. But the experience, blimey, there's nothing like it to reassess what life really means and to see what courage really is.

My sister and my brother-in-law, and my brother, Stu, have all raised money for cancer charities since. So I thought it was about time I did my bit.

Therefore, Uncle Mildred and Other Stories will be available within the next week, priced at £1.53/$2.41 with all proceeds going to cancer charities both in the UK and the US.

I'll post more details soon as I get them to hand.

If, like me, you're pretty struck by the cover of the book, that's all down to my very talented artist sister-in-law, Rebecca Ayris, and letter man extraordinaire - Liam Sweeney.

Now, Chris Benton, he's right up there with the very best short story writers around, in my opinion. He's a man of the night, no doubt. He carves those words from the thick darkness that suffocates us all at times, and he lays them in front of us with no apology, no explanation. Leaves us to recognise our own darkness - if we can bare it, that is.

And that, that is just as it should be.

Are you a writer's writer or a readers writer . . . ?

This is something I have only just become aware of in my own reading. That thing where you no longer read as a reader - no longer read free from textual analysis. No longer read for fun. And God, I miss it. But since taking my writing seriously, analysing the bejesus out of it, analysing the writing of others, I cannot help reading almost anything without unconsciously critiquing the bloody thing.

But here's what I've noticed. Readers - non-writers - don't seem to do that. Where I see plot-holes, poor word choice, or poor sentence structure, they'll just skip all that and say, 'Well, that was a good book. Enjoyed that.'

It appears to me a reader is far more forgiving than a fellow writer, and indeed, more forgiving than ourselves.

So here's the thing. Are we, as writers, too hard on each other? Are we seeking a perfection in our writing, adhering to a set of writerly rules, the reader simply doesn't care about?

Do we needlessly pull ourselves - and each other - to pieces on writing forums, workshops, etc. tackling that rogue word, agonisin over that difficult sentence, that gaping plot hole only we can see when all the reader wants is a good story?

Are we trying to be a writer's writer or a readers writer?

Mmm . . .
